Body
Request Action:
Pass a Resolution to Condemn the Boycott, Divest and Sanction Israel (BDS) Movement and provide that the City of Lauderhill will not invest in, or do business with, any firm or person that boycotts Israel.
Need:
Oppose anti-semitism towards Israel.
Summary Explanation/ Background: TheBoycott, Divest and Sanction Israel Movement (BDS Movement) promotes Anti-Semitism and the elimination of the Jewish state. The Florida State Legislature passed SB-86 in 2016, with bipartisan support, sending a message that they benefit from their relations with Israel and do not support the BDS Movement. The Florida House of Representatives passed HB-527 directing the State Board of Administration to create a list of companies that engage in boycotts of Israel, and instructing all government entities to divest from companies listed. The Anti-BDS bill prevents companies that engage in boycotts of Israel from bidding on local or state government contracts. Other States have passed similar measures prohibiting doing business with companies that engage in boycotts of Israel. The City of Lauderhill is a diverse community that supports and respects all residents, regardless of race, religion or natural origin and opposes doing business with companies that engage in boycotts of Israel. Commissioner Howard Berger requested that this Resolution be brought forward.
