Need:
Why is there a need for this action?
Emergency repairs to the sewer gravity mains and sewer laterals located at NW 49 Ave/17Ct and 1800 block of NW 38 Ave were necessary due the sinkholes that developed in a residential backyard and travel lane along NW 38th Avenue as a result of the flooding that occurred in April.
Summary Explanation/ Background:
Provide a summary/background of this agenda request.
The Utilities Department has found two sinkholes in the following areas: 4900 NW 17 Ct in the backyard of a residential property and on 38 Ave around the 1800 block. After inspecting both locations, it was determined there is a substantial amount of infiltration entering into the City’s gravity sewer line at the connection point that runs through the backyards in the area of 4900 NW 17 Ct and on NW 38th Ave. Both sinkholes pose a significant risk to the resident's property, to the general public along NW 38 Avenue which may also lead to damage to surrounding infrastructure. The emergency purchase should cover the cost of repairing the sewer line break, and restoring the affected areas to its previous condition.
Due to the recent flooding that occurred. The City’s gravity sewer infrastructure is experiencing inflow/infiltration as a result of the flooding. Infiltration, can cause the surrounding soil to erode and wash away, creating voids or empty spaces beneath the surface of the ground, which can cause the ground to collapse and create a sinkhole in areas mentioned above
