Body

Request Action:

A resolution is needed to waive competitive bidding and approve the piggyback of a contract between Lake County and Bennett Fire Products Company, Inc for the purchase of 50 sets of bunker gear.

Need:

Approval is needed to purchase 50 of 100 sets of bunker gear for fire fighters.

Summary Explanation/ Background:

It is the intentions of the Fire Department to acquire a second set of bunker gear for every personnel within our Fire Department for cancer prevention.  Based on clear recommendations from National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1851 for the health and safety of our firefighters, frequent cleaning of bunker gear is becoming the norm. The request for two sets of bunker gear is based on the argument that as one set becomes soiled or contaminated, a secondary set is needed for the firefighter to continue firefighting operations/readiness for the remainder of the shift and to prevent taking the unit out of service while minimizing the risks of cancer.

By one fire fighter affected via illness of death will cause a ripple effect to our community, which does not only impact the Fire Department and our community as a whole. Is also affects their families. When Fire Department staff are provided with protective equipment, this reduces the incidents of illness and disease, allowing them to be available to provide service to the citizens in need.

This purchase is advantageous to the Fire Department and the community as a whole.
